Here are a few notes I took at a talk I went to by Owen Jones, the author of the recently published Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class. I rarely buy books that I read in full, I usually skip entire chapters, but I have devoured 'Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class' by Owen Jones and I managed to skip only about five pages in total :mrgreen: . This evening I went to hear Owen Jones talk about his book, Chavs, the demonization of the working class and participate in the discussion that followed. Chav's challenges what Jones describes as the last acceptable prejudice, class hatred. According to Owen Jones, the middle and upper class, demonize and ridicule those that are of the working class. Our vocabulary for describing the working class has been changed to 'skanger', 'chav' or 'underclass'. €�Chavs: The Demonisation of the Working Class” is the story of the vilification and attacks on the working class by the politicians and media, starting from Thatcher's notorious defeat of the unions in the eighties.
